Yamaha Electric Piano for $700 plus $99.25 Shipping

JR.com offers the Yamaha electric piano for $700. (Shipping $99.25)
I have a Baldwin that is virtually identical to this one and the sound is terrific. However, note that I paid about $2500 for mine about 15 years ago. So this is a real deal. If you have a child starting piano lessons and the price of a "real" piano is daunting to you, I would suggest this one. For all practical purposes, it's exactly the same as playing a real piano, same touch, same pedals, same sound. It's lighter than a regular piano (great for cleaning) AND, MOST IMPORTANTLY, it has a HEADPHONE JACK. Read the full description from Yamaha here.
You can find the same exact piano at Sam's Club for $688 to order online only, however Sam's charges me $178 to ship it, so you end up paying a little more at Sam's, most likely.
* 88 Note full length piano with full size keys
* AWM Tone Generation with stereo sampling
* Fully weighted, graded hammer action
* Sliding key cover and Integrated backboard and pedal base
* Six voices including Piano, harsichord, strings and pipe organ
* Dual mode allows the mixing of two sounds
* Built-in one track recording system
* Digital reverb
* Adjustable Metronome
* Piano music library including the "50 Greats for Piano" music book
* Damper, soft and sustain pedals
* MIDI In/Out/Thru

Things I learned about hardwood and tile

While my guy that's going to lay my hardwood and tile was at my house the other day, I picked his brain for some information and here's a summary of what I found out:
1. Hardwood should be brought into the house and left for 2 days before putting it down, so that it can acclimate to the temperature and humidity of the house. Wood changes size with changes in surroundings, it needs to get used to the house's atmosphere before installing it.
2. Is thick tile less likely to break than thin tile? It doesn't make any difference how thick or thin the tile is, the important thing is that it's layed on a cement board (Durock is a common brand). The cement board is what the tile are glued to. Houses expand and contract with temperature changes and the cement board keeps the tile from moving while allowing the house to move. That is the single thing that keeps tile from breaking in nearly all cases.
3. If I have an area of floor where the subfloor is damaged, can this be repaired to have tile laid over it? Yep, quite doable.
4. How do I tell if my bathroom floor is water-damaged and needs replaced before laying tile? If the floor is soft OR if the plywood subfloor is wavy or raised, compared to the surrounding floor, then it's damaged. Plywood usually gets wavy or elevates with water damage.
5. If I have hardwood, should I have tile at my entrance foyer? Yes, it's recommended, because people bring in water and trash on their shoes. The water will damage hardwood over time and the trash will scratch it over time. It's best to have tile where you enter to protect the hardwood.
6. Does it cost more to install narrower pieces of hardwood instead of wider pieces? Most people do charge more for narrower hardwood, as it's more labor-intensive to lay it. (more pieces = more time)
7. You might have to cut off the bottom of some doors when going from carpet to hardwood or tile, as the new flooring might be higher and thus interfere with the swing of the door. (it's easily done, however)
8. What about grout? Does it need sealed? Standard grout (Tec is a common brand) does need to be sealed, there is a spray sealer that you just spray over the grout lines, you do not have to remove it from the tile. It makes the grout waterproof and prolongs its life. They do make a epoxy grout that is totally waterproof, but most people only use this on countertops or in showers. Epoxy grout is much more expensive than standard grout and has to be applied wearing gloves.
9. Should I turn my leftover hardwood and tile back in to get money back at the place where I bought it? NO, don't do this, you may need matching replacement boards or tile in the future, keep these for possible replacements.

Today's Deal: Stretch your tax rebate check at Sears and K-Mart

That's a $120 bonus for a two-person household that gets $1200 in rebates! This would help buy some new appliances or other great goods at Sears or K-Mart....

New hardwood and tile for the old house

Well, I've had my carpet for 19 years now, and frankly, it's starting to look highly-lived-on. Plus the kitchen and bath linoleum are...well...you don't wanna know!(ie, worn out to a frazzle and carpet shampooed to the point of wrinkling---the carpet lost it's luster a long time ago and I'm totally sick of the linoleum.)
I got the idea to change my floors to hardwood and tile. I'm putting tile in the kitchen, my 1.5 upstairs bathrooms, and right at my front door entrance. Hardwood will go in the living/dining room, den, and hallway. (I already have hardwood under my carpet in each of the 3 bedrooms, so will have that peeled off and re-finish that hardwood to match the new stuff. The old hardwood is in fine shape, so it should refinish well.)
I found a fellow who lays both tile and hardwood at a very reasonable price. He suggested I look at Surplus Sales at Paducah to buy the hardwood and tile, as they have good prices. I went there last night and bought the hardwood and tile and grout for a total cost of around $3250. He will buy the rest of the supplies and lay it all, for about $2050. (He charged 1.5/ft to lay the hardwood and 3.50/ft to lay the tile and I've seen his work, it is very good)
He does not start on my house until May 1 and anticipates he'll have it all done in about 5 days or a little less. (quicker than I thought). I'll report back and hopefully have some pics to post after it's done.

TODAY'S DEAL: BATH TOWELS AND RUGS AT SAM'S CLUB

Went to Sam's Club today, they had some nice striped THICK-pile cotton rugs in greens, reds, browns, and blues for just under $15, these are 30-inches by 50-inches, which happened to be exactly the size I was looking for.
Top that off, they had matching solid color bath and hand towels and wash cloths. The bath towels are under $6, the hand towels under $4, and a 2-pack of wash cloths under $3. These are all cotton and look to be good quality, plus even the rugs are washable (the kind with the sewn-on cotton backing that wash well, and the pile on the rugs is very thick). See for yourself. Go to Sam's Club and browse for these yourself, do a search online for "cotton rugs" and "cotton towels" and "cotton wash cloths" if you want a preview of the colors, but I have to tell you, the colors look MUCH BETTER at the store than online, so GO TO THE STORE TO SEE THESE.

NEWS YOU OUGHTA KNOW

Greg Palast, investigative reporter, tells about the Spitzer take-down and why it occurred. You really need to read this article about why we're in this sub-prime lending mess.
Brief quote from Palast's article (but read the entire URL, it's very informative):
"‘Steering,’ sub-prime loans with usurious kickers, fake inducements to over-borrow, called ‘fraudulent conveyance’ or ‘predatory lending’ under US law, were almost completely forbidden in the olden days (Clinton Administration and earlier) by federal regulators and state laws as nothing more than fancy loan-sharking.
But when the Bush regime took over, Countrywide and its banking brethren were told to party hearty – it was OK now to steer’m, fake’m, charge’m and take’m.
But there was this annoying party-pooper. The Attorney General of New York, Eliot Spitzer, who sued these guys to a fare-thee-well. Or tried to."

Here is the original article that Spitzer wrote about the sub-prime mess being related to the Bush administration, just before he was outed about the call girl issue. Interesting timing, don't you think?

(If you order this product, BE SURE to change your shipping to "Super Saver Shipping" in the checkout, because they do NOT default to this option, you have to select it.) Usually I get this product within 3-5 days when I order it, so even the Super Saver Shipping is pretty fast.

TODAY'S DEAL: 5-SHELF WIRE STORAGE UNIT AT HOME DEPOT

From this week's Home Depot ad in Paducah KY:
5-SHELF INDUSTRIAL WIRE STORAGE UNIT
Holds 800 lbs per shelf. While supplies last.
Was $69.97
Sale Price: $49.97
These are great units, I have put together several units of this type. You can actually leave out some of the shelves if you want taller storage space within the unit. So this could be a 3- or 4-shelf storage unit instead of 5-shelf. Plus, you can adjust the shelves to your needs as desired, so that some are shorter spaced and some are taller spaced.
They do not require any tools to assemble and they are rock solid when you get them together.
Use them in your garage, a kid's room, kitchen pantry, office, anywhere you need more storage.

NEWS YOU OUGHTA KNOW

1. Go to This Linkto hear a former big pharma rep tell just how dirty the business has become. And now you know why I try to take ONLY medications that have been on the market long enough to be "patient-tested."
2. Go to This link to find out that our prices aren't really going up....instead it's the value of your money that is going down. The price of oil compared to the price of gold, ever since the year 2000, is the same ratio almost exactly. However, since your dollars are now worth much less, and because oil is a world market, it takes more and more dollars to buy that same gallon of gas. Every time the Fed prints more money, your dollars are worth less. Think about it.

TIPS for Buying Online

I don't know what the rest of you do to help ensure online purchasing safety, but here's a few of the things that I do:
1. Any time a site has obvious misspelling or other grammatical errors, I do not order from that site. In my opinion, if they don't have the staffing to have a site that's well kept from the standpoint of English language, then I don't care to do business with them.
2. I always use the same credit card for my online buying for two reasons:
** It helps me see my online purchases on my bill at the end of the month, and scan for debits that might be bogus.
** If anyone gets a credit card number from stealing it online, they will at least get only ONE credit card and not a half dozen.
3. I NEVER NEVER EVER use a debit card online. My stepson had his debit card number stolen that way and had several hundred dollars' worth of charges put on the card before he caught the problem. He got his money back, but it took a couple of weeks.
4. I rarely "set up an account" when offered the opportunity to do so at an online store. But if I do, I don't store my credit card info on their site.
5. If I have an online account, I NEVER use the same password as my online banking account. That's a sure-fire way to ask for trouble.
6. Any time I have a doubt about a new online shopping site, I do a search for the opinions of others who have used the site. If the site gets a uniformly bad rating, then I don't use it.
7. Using Paypal to pay for an online purchase, when the option exists, may be a way to avoid giving your credit card info to online shopping sites, as many do accept Paypal.
